SHIVERS

(Two-channel video, 11’22, 2024)

Immersed in a dark atmosphere, Shivers depicts sculptures from tropical regions across the globe, where their apparent stillness is captured through a series of camera flashes. Filmed in a museum’s collection depot, the flash and its repeated charging pierces the darkness and silence that pervades the space. Fashioned as a “museological horror” in its referencing of horror films, might the past stir to life and manifest in this constant probing of darkness. Shivers explores the context and contrast between the climate of the artefacts’ origins to the climate control they are currently exposed to in Western museology. Injecting a sense of rhythm is the searing soundtrack that rekindles the vibrant (past) lives of these artefacts - when the lights go off and the doors shut.
